Collaborative Practice is Truly Global

I recently had the distinct privilege of joining Board member, Kay Chan and incoming Board member, Rajan Chettiar, in presenting at the International Malaysia Law Conference in Kuala Lumpur. Though Kay was unable to be a part of the actual presentation because of a prior commitment, we couldn’t have done it without him. I want to emphasize the incredible work Rajan and Kay are doing in Asia. They are the co-chairs of the IACP Asia Collaborative Law Task Force and have almost single-handedly opened the eyes of thought leaders in several jurisdictions in Asia to the promise of Collaborative Practice. Kay and Rajan presented earlier this year to the Malaysian Bar Association, and have assisted the Malaysian Bar in setting up an Introductory Interdisciplinary Basic Training in Malaysia in November using the IACP Training Faculty. They are also bringing an Introductory Interdisciplinary Basic Training to Singapore and to Japan. The spread of Collaborative Practice around the globe is at the very heart of the mission of the IACP, and growth into new regions is of paramount importance.

The thrill and wonder in the eyes of those who were present for our presentation at the International Malaysia Law Conference was fulfilling in a very special way. Seeing the excitement of other professionals when they are first introduced to Collaborative Practice rekindles the fire in me. You can literally see their minds opening to all of the new possibilities, and you can feel how excited they are to have found a new way to help families resolve their disputes. I cannot wait to see how quickly Collaborative Practice spreads following the training, and I look forward to hearing of their progress.

While I was in Asia, I also had the opportunity to speak to the Collaborative Practice group in Hong Kong. It was fantastic to reach out to them and really connect on a personal level. It is that type of connection that we are hoping to foster through our Global Partners program, which we recently launched. We hope our Global Partners will be a group of Collaborative Practice leaders from all over the globe, who will meet via video conference and at Forum to share ideas and connect in ways they have never been able to connect in the past. I am thrilled to say that the practice group in Hong Kong made a commitment to join the IACP Global Partners program while I was visiting them, and they will join the national organizations from Italy and Brazil, as well as a practice group from Pennsylvania as our first Global Partners. I very much look forward to building a relationship with all of our Global Partners and welcoming a delegate from each of those organizations to a special meeting at the Forum in Seattle.

The connections we build will help to expand Collaborative Practice into new areas and to truly transform how families resolve disputes worldwide.

The Spring IACP Collaborative Review was dedicated to the IACP 2015 Divorce Experience Study. The study was the first extensive survey to compare the experience of those who used Collaborative Practice with those who used other divorce methods.

We received an overwhelmingly positive response from the study, and in an effort to keep the conversation going, we are breaking down some of the most impactful data from the survey in our monthly, 100 Words of Wisdom, provided by The IACP Study Task Force. See the fourth installment of '100 Words of Wisdom' below.

100 Words of Wisdom:

Clients report being very satisfied with individual aspects of their financial settlement (e.g., account division), yet few report being very satisfied with their overall financial outcome. Dilemma: results show that satisfaction with general financial outcomes, rather than specific outcomes, is highly correlated with satisfaction with the Collaborative process.

PRACTICE TIP: Normalize the reality that clients’ financial estate will be less post-divorce than during the marriage. Professionals should recognize and help clients deal with the financial pain and loss. Ideally, clients will then feel as satisfied with their overall financial outcome as with the individual aspects of their financial settlement.

Is your practice group struggling to truly embrace the interdisciplinary model? Sometimes attorneys may be reluctant to use the services of other professionals due to a fear that their role may be diminished by using the full team. Create a safe place to have conversations within the practice group about the value and roles of professionals from each discipline and how each professional on a team can support the process. Power struggles are opportunities for deeper conversations and trust building.

Did You Know?

IACP's Office has gone Virtual

In April 2018, we announced that IACP had moved to a completely virtual office. This move has enabled us to dramatically cut overhead costs, which has allowed us to focus resources on member services and spreading the word about CP around the globe. We have also reduced our impact on the planet by moving away from paper usage whenever possible. We ask that members refrain from sending mail to our previous office location and email us instead.

All membership dues and donations can now be made online with a check or card. To renew your membership, simply log in and you can renew directly from your dashboard. Don't remember your password? Reset it here.

If you're a Whole Group administrator, you can renew multiple people in your group at one time! Follow these steps in order to do so quickly, and easily online.

New to IACP? Fill out the new member application quickly, online.

Whole Group Members Save More!

Many Collaborative Practice groups have made the choice to require all their members to be members of IACP. When groups elect Whole Group status, their members benefit from
being included in the worldwide community of Collaborative Professionals.

membership and pay the reduced $145 Whole Group
