As I write this, the excitement of our first virtual Forum is still echoing in my head. I didn't think it possible, but I actually engaged with new people online and established what I believe will be ongoing relationships. As with every Forum, I learned, I heard stories, and I laughed. Okay, I admit it – I even danced a little! The best thing was the sense of community, despite being held in a one-dimensional container, that I felt. I am so proud of and grateful for the staff for putting together a once in a lifetime experience. And I applaud our community of adventurers and learners who leaned into the new world with enthusiasm, humor, and warmth. Here's to Forum 2020! By the way, I did keep a running list of all those I owe and who owe me giant hugs when we are finally able to meet physical energy to energy again in San Diego next year! My vision is synergy – harnessing the group's energy to elevate our creativity and skills to accomplish greater goals. I see it as more interaction between our committees – Membership interacting with Higher Education to connect with new legal graduates who, in turn, are provided mentorship through the Practice Group Committee. And our Online Education Committee will expand training options to broaden our skills. I see Equity and Inclusion underpinning all our committee work spurring us on to a deeper understanding of what diversity truly means. We will utilize Modest Means programs to reach unserved communities and build Collaborative incubator programs to attract and mentor new practitioners. And last, we will take advantage of the hidden gift COVID and isolation have given us by strengthening our international dialogues and relationships. Tele-platforms are allowing us to connect over vast distances and time differences in a way that being live didn't. I am excited about the opportunities this presents in allowing us to know one another and grow multi-culturally. As a leader, I am aware of the long history of leaders whose shoulders I stand on. My hope is that I live up to their legacies while adding my own while serving as President. In solidarity, Anne Lucas IACP Board President |
