I am sitting at my desk looking out at my Japanese maple. Her bark and branches are a brilliant orange in the winter, and hung in her branches is my collection of brilliantly colored blown glass balls. Even though it’s dark, the wind is moving the balls around, so their colors are reflecting in a spotlight on the ground. It seems like a very appropriate moment to reflect on 2020 and anticipate 2021. This morning, I am visiting my 2020 Museum of Love and Learning, whose exhibits and dioramas, like the spotlight on my tree, reflect not the crisis and disasters but rather the highlights of 2020 in preparation of welcoming 2021 with an open heart. I think 2020 brought out our healthy skills – adaptation, creativity, and flexibility. Instead of closing our practices, we adapted to Zoom – meeting people in their homes, cars, and garages to provide our services in helping families move through divorce. I had to flex my skill set - my visual and auditory sense rose to the front of my sensory skills shifted to the sidelines. As our ability to travel and come together was cut off, here at IACP and worldwide, we shifted to online training to continue to educate Collaborative professionals. We shifted our beloved Forum from in-person to virtual and did the same for basic trainings. I am proud of us as professionals and colleagues for all we accomplished! Here’s to raising a glass in salute to the year that was!
