In 2013, I submitted the Leadership Academy application. I didn’t think I would be chosen. Why would I be chosen? I was sure that there were applicants with a heck of a lot more experience than me. After all, I had only completed one Collaborative matter and served on my practice group’s Board for just under two years. On the other hand, I was passionate. I so wanted Collaborative Practice to grow in my community. And I wanted to learn from others how they got it going in their communities. How did they turn Collaborative Process from an idea – a passion – to an accepted form of dispute resolution? To my great delight, I was invited to join the Leadership Academy! And I learned from and brainstormed with my fellow students. To be honest, they had some bizarre ideas, and they thought very differently than I did. But as I came to realize from my instructors, a diversity of thought, life experiences, and leadership styles was key to growing Collaborative communities. Many of my fellow students would come to be life-long friends. They sound boarded with me as I became president of my practice group as well as a leader in my state and implemented ideas in Tampa Bay and Florida. We marveled together about how the growth of the Collaborative community in their locales were mirroring the growth I was now seeing in my own. And we celebrated as some of us have come to bring our leadership to the international level as IACP Board members. In 2013, I didn’t think I’d be chosen. But I applied. And I’m sure as heck glad that I did. Now it’s your chance. Will you apply? - Adam B. Cordover |
